Aquatic Occupational Therapy
Aquatic occupational therapy is traditional occupational therapy in a nontraditional environment.  The goals addressed in the water are the same that would be targeted in a traditional occupational therapy session.  Dr. Bushong designs an individualized therapy program based on your child's needs and your family's specific goals for therapy.  Therapy sessions address a variety of components, which can include fine motor, visual motor, gross motor, and self-regulation skills.  In addition, activities of daily living (ADLs) such as dressing and functional independence are woven throughout the therapy session.  While addressing therapeutic goals, your child is also developing swimming skills, water safety skills, and overcoming water fears if they are present.

Aquatic occupational therapy may be helpful for children with the following conditions:
  • Sensory Processing Dysfunction
  • Developmental Delay
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Down Syndrome
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Spina Bifida
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Orthopedic Disorders
  • Arthritis
Consultation
After gaining an in-depth understanding of your child’s strengths and needs, Dr. Bushong is available to consult with educational teams and other therapists to create individualized plans to support your child’s success at home, in school, and in the community.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you work on in the pool and what are the goals?
Aquatic therapy is very flexible and specific to the needs of the client.  Goals addressed are the same that would be worked on in a traditional occupational therapy session.  The feedback from the water helps organize the sensory system to achieve a just right level of arousal and engage in challenging tasks. Water provides sensory input that overloads hypersensitivity to tactile input frequently felt by individuals with sensory processing issues. Movement through the water provides proprioceptive feedback through the natural resistance of water, in turn increasing overall sensory awareness and body awareness.   On land we only feel feedback from movement in a downward direction from gravitational pull, whereas in water feedback from movement is provided in all planes.  It has been noted that working in the water helps desensitize gravitational and postural insecurities.

Where does therapy take place?
Poseidon Therapy is provided at an indoor swimming pool located at Clare Gardens, 2626 Osceola Street, Denver, CO 80212.  We rent the indoor pool for private sessions.

What is the cost?
Poseidon Therapy currently accepts Medicaid, as well as private pay clients for aquatic occupational therapy sessions.  Consultation fees are also billed at an hourly rate and are typically not covered by Medicaid.   Please contact Poseidon Therapy for information about our current hourly rates.  Adult groups are provided free of charge to residents of the Clare Gardens.  Outside participants can offer a donation to support group sustainability.

How frequent are therapy sessions?
There is no commitment for a specific number of sessions or frequency of therapy.  It is the choice of the family if you would like to participate in a session once a week or if you would simply like to try out one session of therapy.

What is your cancellation policy?
We understand that life happens and schedules need to be changed.  Please provide at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel an appointment. If you do not show up for your scheduled appointment, and you have not notified us 24 hours in advance, you will be asked to pay the cost of your reserved session.
